Our First Christmas
Christmas is such a great time of year! It’s even more magical when it’s your first as a married couple! It was so nice to share this special season together in our own home and in our own way. Although our Christmas collection is not nearly as elaborate as Halloween, we decorated our humble little home with Christmas cheer, including lights on the outside of our house (with the help of Jeremy and his ladder lol) We loved coming home to the sights of garland and red bows, the smells of cinnamon spice and pine tree and the sounds of Michael Buble’s Christmas CD, that played EVERY single day until Christmas! (Can never get too much of that voice!)
We had fun making memories as we bought our first Christmas tree that fit oh, so perfectly in our living room, taking Christmas pictures for our cards, buying our stockings- each different to reflect our individual tastes and personality. We even included our cat, MooMoo. Her stocking was the best of them all! Hers is a cat holding a double-sided fish on a string—one side says naughty and the other says nice. Hahaha we even filled it with stocking stuffers. I love my cat and I love spoiling her even more! This year Brett also started his new Nutcracker collection that he’s been talking about for a long time. Our mantel was covered with them! It looked so nice. He’s determined to get one new one each year…probably until we have no more room in the garage to store them all!
With 3 different sets of family to visit who all live far away from each other, much of our time was spent traveling to one house to pick up and dash off to another. Lots and lots and lots of driving! But we were happy to do it because for the first time in almost 4 years we had “our own” Christmas too. It was special to wake up next to each other, get up leisurely and have “just the two of us” time. It was romantic in fact- to make breakfast, sit by the fireplace in our pajamas and exchange gifts, tell stories and make lasting memories! We can only imagine how much more fun it will be when kids are in the picture and there’s a huge pile of toys to unwrap!
As the years go on and our family expands we want to create new traditions. For starters, this year Brett gave me a sweet and unexpected Christmas card on Christmas Eve which kicked off our first tradition. We love the sentimental stuff!
Christmas Eve lunch was celebrated at Brett’s sister, Carly’s house. It was a great time of wonderful fellowship and good food. Carly made an amazing homemade lasagna! Yummy! Brett’s mom and stepdad blessed us tremendously with a week vacation anywhere in the world as their Christmas gift! We are already thinking of using this trip to celebrate our 1 year anniversary which will be here before we know it! Let the planning begin! For Christmas Eve evening, we traveled up to Hesperia to visit my sister Carolyn and her family. It’s always a relaxing, “kick back” time (very refreshing during the hustle and bustle of the holidays). We exchanged gifts and then played with them!! We baked cake pops for the first time with Cassie’s new cake pop maker….mine came out more like shish kabobs!! Cassie and I laughed so hard our sides hurt, played games of pool and tested our Picasso skills at Wii Pictionary. It’s true that time really does fly when you’re having fun!
On Christmas Day, after our own celebrations, we drove out to Palm Desert (yes, the desert… again) and enjoyed a delicious traditional Christmas dinner with Brett’s dad and stepmom Karen and all his brothers and sisters—the house is busting at the seams with people! While there we always have fun playing board games. This year was no exception; we played our new, SOUR Apples to Apples, which provided us with a lot of good laughs!!
